Our Blood is Ink
Founded on the back of hard work and strong family values, CPW Printers has been a family business from the start.
In 1927, Laurie Backhouse established L. Backhouse Printers. After the Second World War, he was joined by his two sons, Rae and Laurie Jnr.
Intent on growing their production capacity, L. Backhouse Printers continued to expand their footprint until they merged with City Printing Works (est. 1915) in 1987, to become Pietermaritzburg’s oldest printing company.
Printing. It’s in our blood.
Over the years, Laurie’s legacy stood the test of time, with the third generation of Backhouses stepping up to the press to show their colours.
Today his grandsons, Mark and Craig, fulfil the roles of Sales Director and Director respectively, and Rae’s son-in-law, Colin Maher, has adopted the role of Production Director.
Together with our 45 staff members (many of whom make up the third and fourth generations of their families to work at CPW Printers), we bring more than 600 years of printing experience to the table.
In fact, having delivered exceptional service to the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands and beyond for the past 105 years, it’s no wonder we’re the province’s longest operating printing company.
With you for the long (or short) run.
We’ve seen it all since our inception 100-odd years ago and remain committed to keeping up with the times. From bromide and positives, imagesetters and computer-to-plate technology, to a fully digital suite that complements our lithographic printing, we’ve kept our finger on the pulse to remain relevant within the ever-changing printing industry.
Our cutting-edge advantage
At CPW, we believe that diversity brings opportunity. With a variety of machines at our disposal, we’re able to offer a broad range of printing services, from sheet-fed to continuous reel printing, variable data printing, poster printing, label printing, flyer printing, cheque printing, and more.
Our extensive warehousing and storage capacity means that we’re able to produce and store semi-complete stock for consistent clients, thus reducing costs and improving turnaround times even more so.
